Our Mission

"To listen compassionately to those deprived of basic needs, and together with them, find creative ways to alleviate their suffering."

The Place is a non-profit social service organization that has been serving Forsyth County families since 1975 with critical services. The Place also operates a thrift store to help support agency operations.

In the fall of 2005, 192 Katrina evacuee families were helped with food, clothes, and emergency basic needs.

Clients seeking assistance should call 770-887-1098 for an appointment and to learn what information will be needed to document and justify assistance.

The Place of Forsyth County, Inc. began in 1975. Each year our work expands to ensure that we are able to assist the growing population and changing needs of our residents in their time of need. The Place has provided emergency basic needs in Forsyth County since its inception. We operate through the financial support received from our donors, grants, thrift store sales and the United Way of Forsyth County . We also rely on many dedicated volunteers to help us carry out our vital mission.

As the lead agency in our county, we provided $785,156 of in-kind and financial assistance in 2006. Katrina reminded us that there are crisis needs 365 days a year. Our core programs focus on basic survival needs. Our operations are monitored to assure accountability and effectiveness while assistance is given with compassion. In carrying out our mission, other key components include the following; advocacy, education, referrals, and encouraging clients to “give back” by helping at The Place.

  • Food Program: includes our Surplus pantry, Food pantry, Wednesday Noon Day Meals, and monthly Senior Luncheons. Our objective is to ensure that no one goes hungry.
  • Direct Emergency Assistance Program: helps people in crisis situations by preventing disconnection of utilities, to acquire required medication, prevent eviction/foreclosure, prevent homelessness and refer them if there are medical needs.
  • The Elderly Assistance: ensures that the basic needs of our senior citizens are met.
  • The Medical Fund: provides prescription vouchers and limited emergency dental care to eliminate pain.
  • Hands Across Forsyth Program: provides Thanksgiving food boxes and Christmas gifts for all County children living in poverty.
  • The Youth Program: ensures that the basic needs of children in Forsyth County are met.
  • Thrift Store Program: provides Thrift Store Vouchers for Basic Needs, On The Job Training and Inter Agency Child Need Vouchers.
